How FeedMeNot works and how it is built

FeedMeNot is a small app built around one observation: much of the pull of ordering food is the ritual, not the meal. You browse, you choose, you wait. The app keeps that ritual and removes the payment. This page explains the design choices, what happens to your data and how the app has changed.

The idea in four screens

  1. Browse. Pretend restaurants with real-feeling menus.
  2. Cart. Fill it with exactly what you are craving.
  3. Checkout. The bill is Rs 0. There is no payment screen.
  4. Wait. A craving timer runs while a pretend rider moves on a map. At the end the app shows the money, calories and urges you let pass.

Why a wait of about 20 minutes

Craving research and clinical practice describe urges as rising, peaking and falling. Techniques such as urge surfing, studied by Marlatt and colleagues, ask people to ride out an urge instead of acting on it. The app turns that waiting time into something to watch. It is a habit tool and has not been clinically tested. See the urge surfing guide for the background and sources.

How the menus are made

All restaurants and dishes are made up. We built a catalogue of 73 pretend restaurants and about 1,900 dishes across 16 categories, then matched food photographs to dishes so the browsing feels real. Food photographs come from Pexels under its free licence. No restaurant is contacted and no real brand is used.

Privacy by design

  • Your cravings, streaks, journal and stats are stored on your phone, not on our servers.
  • The only thing sent to a server is your email address, so we can send a sign-in code.
  • Ads are served by Google AdMob. The privacy policy lists each screen where ads appear.
  • There is no payment screen for the pretend orders. Only the optional Pro plan is paid, and Google Play handles that.

What we do not know yet

We do not have evidence that FeedMeNot reduces real orders for most people, and we say so in the app and on this site. The goal of the guides, tools and recipes here is to give you practical options either way. If you try the app and have feedback, write to hello@feedmenot.co.in.

Get the app on Google Play, try it in your browser, or read the press kit.

Fill the cart. Watch the rider. Keep your money.

Free on Android. No sign-up needed to look around.
