12 ways to cut your food delivery spending

By the FeedMeNot team. Updated 20 October 2026.

You do not have to stop ordering to spend less. Most of the extra money goes to a handful of repeat patterns, and each of them can be changed with a small rule. Here are twelve that work for different kinds of people.

1. Find your pattern first

Open your order history and look at the last 30 days. Write down the day, the time and the reason for each order: hunger, tiredness, boredom, a party, or no reason at all. The orders with no real reason are where the saving is.

2. Set a monthly cap and track it

Pick a number you are comfortable with, such as Rs 3,000 a month, and note each order against it. A visible cap works better than a vague intention, because every order now has a cost you can see.

3. Order once, not three times

Three small orders in a week carry three sets of delivery and platform charges. One bigger order for the weekend, with food that reheats well, avoids two of them.

4. Look at the total, not the dish price

The menu price is not what you pay. Delivery, platform fees, taxes and a tip all get added. Before you tap pay, read the final amount and ask whether you would still order it at that price.

5. Skip the add-ons you did not plan

Extra sides, drinks and desserts are easy to add at checkout and easy to regret. Decide what you will order before you open the app, and stick to it.

6. Pick up instead of delivery now and then

If the restaurant is close, collecting the order yourself removes the delivery charge and often gets you a hotter meal. A short walk is a bonus.

7. Plan your treat days

Choose one or two days a week when ordering is allowed. A planned treat feels better than a panicked one, and the rest of the week becomes simpler.

8. Keep three easy meals at home

Most late night orders happen because the kitchen has nothing quick. Keep ingredients for three meals that take under fifteen minutes, such as egg bhurji, a vegetable pulao or a toasted sandwich.

9. Delay every order by 20 minutes

Open the app, build the cart, then wait. Many urges fade in that time. If you still want it after twenty minutes, order it with a clear head.

10. Do the ritual without the order

Part of the pull is the scrolling and the cart. FeedMeNot lets you do that with a pretend order and a Rs 0 bill, so you get the ritual and keep the money.

11. Remove the one-tap temptation

Log out of delivery apps, turn off their notifications and take them off your home screen. Offers that arrive at 10 pm are designed to be tapped.

12. Give the saved money a job

Money you skip spending disappears quietly unless it goes somewhere. Move it to savings on the same day, or set it against a goal such as a trip. Try the spend calculator to see what a few skipped orders add up to.

Fill the cart. Watch the rider. Keep your money.

Common questions

What is a realistic monthly food delivery budget?

It depends on your income and habits. A simple approach is to look at your last three months, then set a cap about 20 to 30 percent below the average and adjust from there.

Do delivery apps charge extra beyond the menu price?

Most add delivery, platform and tax charges, and sometimes a tip. The final amount is shown before you pay, so read it every time.
