Why journaling works for habits

A habit is hard to change while it is invisible. Writing down the trigger and what you did turns a vague feeling ("I always order at night") into specific facts ("six of nine urges were boredom after 10 pm"). Facts are easier to plan around.

What to look for after a week

  • The top trigger. Plan one specific alternative for it.
  • Timing. If most entries cluster at the same hour, change what happens just before that hour.
  • Strength. Compare strong and weak urges. Strong ones may be real hunger.
