Craving maggi and late night instant noodles? Make it at home
Time: 10 minutes. Serves 1. Type: Egg or veg. Rough home cost: Rs 20 to 35 (an estimate that changes with city, season and brand).
Why you crave it
Instant noodles are salty, hot and ready in minutes, which is why they are the default at midnight. The craving is for something fast and warm. A few extras turn the packet into a fuller meal.
Before you order: take the 20 minute pause
A craving usually peaks and fades. Start the craving timer and rate the urge. If it is still strong after twenty minutes, this recipe is a better answer than a delivery order, and you will have a hot meal ready in about the same time.
Ingredients
- 1 pack instant noodles with masala
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup frozen peas or chopped vegetables
- 1 small tomato, chopped
- 1 green chilli, a few coriander leaves, 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp oil or butter
Method
- Boil 1.5 cups water, add the vegetables and cook for 2 minutes.
- Add the noodles and cook for 2 minutes, loosening with a fork.
- Make a small well, crack in the egg and stir it through or let it poach for 2 minutes.
- Add half the tastemaker, the tomato, chilli and pepper. Taste before adding more, as the packet is very salty.
- Finish with oil and coriander.
What this costs compared with delivery
The home cost above is a rough range for the ingredients, based on typical retail prices. Delivery apps add fees, taxes and often a tip on top of the dish price.
