Craving pizza? Make it at home

By the FeedMeNot team. Updated 3 November 2026.

Tawa pizza on roti or pita
Time: 20 minutes. Serves 2. Type: Veg. Rough home cost: Rs 50 to 90 a serving (an estimate that changes with city, season and brand).

Why you crave it

Pizza is chewy base, salty cheese and a tangy sauce in one bite. The craving is mostly about hot melted cheese and a crisp underside. You can get both with a tawa, a lid and a ready base.

Before you order: take the 20 minute pause

A craving usually peaks and fades. Start the craving timer and rate the urge. If it is still strong after twenty minutes, this recipe is a better answer than a delivery order, and you will have a hot meal ready in about the same time.

Ingredients

  • 2 pita breads or thick wheat rotis
  • 4 tbsp pizza sauce, or 3 tbsp tomato ketchup mixed with 1 tbsp tomato puree and a pinch of oregano
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella or pizza cheese
  • Toppings: sliced onion, capsicum, sweet corn, olives, paneer cubes
  • 1 tsp oil or butter
  • Oregano and chilli flakes

Method

  1. Heat a tawa on medium and warm the base for a minute on each side so it crisps slightly.
  2. Spread the sauce, leaving a clear edge, and add half the cheese.
  3. Add toppings, then the rest of the cheese so the toppings stay in place.
  4. Brush a little oil on the edge. Cover with a lid and cook on low heat for 5 to 6 minutes until the cheese melts and the bottom is crisp.
  5. Sprinkle oregano and chilli flakes, rest for a minute and cut.
Tip. Keep the heat low and the lid on. High heat burns the base before the cheese melts. A drop of water on the tawa edge under the lid helps trap steam.

What this costs compared with delivery

The home cost above is a rough range for the ingredients, based on typical retail prices. Delivery apps add fees, taxes and often a tip on top of the dish price. Common questions

Can I make this in an oven or air fryer?

Yes. 200 degrees C for 6 to 8 minutes works for pita bases. Watch the edges.

Which cheese melts best?

Low moisture mozzarella or a ready pizza cheese blend. Processed slices melt but do not stretch.
