Craving momos? Make it at home

By the FeedMeNot team. Updated 3 November 2026.

Steamed vegetable momos with red chutney
Time: 50 minutes. Serves 3, about 18 pieces. Type: Veg. Rough home cost: Rs 25 to 45 a serving (an estimate that changes with city, season and brand).

Why you crave it

Momos are soft, juicy and hot, with a sharp chilli chutney on the side. The craving is usually for the contrast of mild dumpling and spicy dip, plus the fun of eating them with your hands. A simple filling and a good chutney get you there.

Before you order: take the 20 minute pause

A craving usually peaks and fades. Start the craving timer and rate the urge. If it is still strong after twenty minutes, this recipe is a better answer than a delivery order, and you will have a hot meal ready in about the same time.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup maida (refined flour), 1/4 tsp salt and warm water for a firm dough
  • 1.5 cups finely chopped cabbage, 1/2 cup grated carrot, 1/4 cup chopped spring onion
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, 1 tsp soy sauce, 1/2 tsp pepper, salt, 1 tsp oil
  • For the chutney: 4 dried red chillies soaked in hot water, 3 garlic cloves, 1 tomato, 1 tsp vinegar, salt

Method

  1. Knead the dough firm and rest it covered for 20 minutes.
  2. Salt the chopped cabbage, wait 5 minutes and squeeze out the water. Mix with the other filling ingredients.
  3. Roll the dough thin and cut 7 cm circles. Place a spoon of filling in each and pleat the edges closed.
  4. Steam on a greased plate over boiling water for 10 to 12 minutes, covered.
  5. For the chutney, blend the soaked chillies, garlic, tomato, vinegar and salt until smooth and simmer for 3 minutes.
Tip. Squeezing the water from the cabbage is the step that decides whether your wrappers tear. A wet filling makes soggy momos.

What this costs compared with delivery

The home cost above is a rough range for the ingredients, based on typical retail prices. Delivery apps add fees, taxes and often a tip on top of the dish price. Common questions

Can I use wheat flour?

Yes, but the wrappers are firmer. Mix half wheat and half maida for a softer result.

Can I fry them instead?

Pan fry the steamed momos in a little oil for a few minutes for a crisp bottom.
