Craving masala dosa? Make it at home

By the FeedMeNot team. Updated 3 November 2026.

Instant rava dosa with potato masala
Time: 30 minutes. Serves 3. Type: Veg. Rough home cost: Rs 25 to 45 a serving (an estimate that changes with city, season and brand).

Why you crave it

A dosa is about crisp edges, a soft middle and the spiced potato inside. If you do not have fermented batter, rava dosa gives you a crisp, lacy version in half an hour.

Before you order: take the 20 minute pause

A craving usually peaks and fades. Start the craving timer and rate the urge. If it is still strong after twenty minutes, this recipe is a better answer than a delivery order, and you will have a hot meal ready in about the same time.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup rava (fine semolina), 1/4 cup rice flour, 1/4 cup maida
  • 1/2 cup curd and about 2 cups water for a thin batter
  • 1 tsp cumin, 1 green chilli chopped, 1 tbsp chopped coriander, black pepper, salt
  • For the masala: 3 boiled potatoes, 1 onion, 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/4 tsp turmeric, curry leaves, 1 chilli, salt, 1 tbsp oil

Method

  1. Mix rava, rice flour, maida, curd and water into a thin, pourable batter. Add the seasoning and rest for 15 minutes.
  2. For the masala, crackle mustard seeds in oil, add curry leaves, chilli and onion and cook until soft. Add turmeric and crumbled potatoes with a splash of water and salt. Mash lightly.
  3. Heat a tawa very hot. Stir the batter (it thickens, so add water) and pour from a height in a lace pattern, starting from the edges.
  4. Drizzle oil around the edges and cook on medium until golden and crisp. Do not flip.
  5. Add the potato masala, fold and serve with chutney.
Tip. The batter should look like thin buttermilk. If it is thick the dosa will be soft instead of crisp.

What this costs compared with delivery

The home cost above is a rough range for the ingredients, based on typical retail prices. Delivery apps add fees, taxes and often a tip on top of the dish price. Common questions

Do I need fermented batter?

Not for this version. The curd gives the mild sourness.

Why does my rava dosa tear?

The tawa is either too cool or the batter is too thick. Heat the tawa well and pour from the edges inward.
