Craving kathi roll and shawarma wraps? Make it at home

By the FeedMeNot team. Updated 3 November 2026.

Egg or paneer kathi roll on a tawa
Time: 25 minutes. Serves 2. Type: Egg or veg. Rough home cost: Rs 35 to 65 a roll (an estimate that changes with city, season and brand).

Why you crave it

A kathi roll is a hot, flaky wrap holding a spiced filling and a tangy onion crunch. It is the ultimate hand-held late night food. Frozen parathas or rotis make the wrap quick.

Before you order: take the 20 minute pause

A craving usually peaks and fades. Start the craving timer and rate the urge. If it is still strong after twenty minutes, this recipe is a better answer than a delivery order, and you will have a hot meal ready in about the same time.

Ingredients

  • 2 rotis or frozen parathas
  • 2 eggs beaten with salt, pepper and a pinch of chilli, or 150 g paneer cubes tossed with 1/2 tsp chaat masala and 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced and soaked in lemon juice and salt
  • 2 tbsp green chutney (coriander and mint), 1 tsp ketchup
  • 2 tsp oil, 1 green chilli

Method

  1. For the egg roll, pour half the beaten egg on a hot oiled tawa, place the roti on top and press. Flip when set.
  2. For the paneer roll, sear the spiced paneer cubes in oil for 3 minutes until browned.
  3. Spread green chutney and a little ketchup on the roti.
  4. Add the egg or paneer, the onion and chilli.
  5. Roll tightly, wrap the bottom in foil or paper and toast for a minute.
Tip. Press the roti onto the egg while it is still wet. They bond, and the roll holds together better.

What this costs compared with delivery

The home cost above is a rough range for the ingredients, based on typical retail prices. Delivery apps add fees, taxes and often a tip on top of the dish price. Common questions
