Craving indian sweets and gulab jamun? Make it at home

By the FeedMeNot team. Updated 3 November 2026.

Quick sooji halwa
Time: 15 minutes. Serves 3. Type: Veg. Rough home cost: Rs 15 to 30 a serving (an estimate that changes with city, season and brand).

Why you crave it

A sweet craving at night is often a craving for warmth and comfort, not just sugar. Sooji halwa is quick, uses things you already have and feels like a proper dessert.

Before you order: take the 20 minute pause

A craving usually peaks and fades. Start the craving timer and rate the urge. If it is still strong after twenty minutes, this recipe is a better answer than a delivery order, and you will have a hot meal ready in about the same time.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sooji (fine semolina)
  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1.5 cups water or half milk and half water
  • 3 cardamom pods, crushed
  • A handful of chopped almonds, cashews and raisins

Method

  1. Heat the water with the sugar and cardamom until the sugar dissolves. Keep it hot.
  2. In a pan roast the sooji in ghee on low heat for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring, until it smells nutty and turns light golden.
  3. Add the nuts and raisins and stir for 30 seconds.
  4. Carefully pour in the hot sugar water (it will splutter) and stir quickly to avoid lumps.
  5. Cook covered on low for 2 minutes until thick and the ghee separates. Serve hot.
Tip. Use the 1 : 1 : 3 rule: equal parts sooji and sugar by volume, and three parts liquid. Hot water prevents lumps.

What this costs compared with delivery

The home cost above is a rough range for the ingredients, based on typical retail prices. Delivery apps add fees, taxes and often a tip on top of the dish price. Common questions

Can I reduce the sugar?

Yes, down to 1/3 cup. The halwa will be less sweet but still good.

Can I make it without ghee?

Butter works. Oil does not give the same flavour.
